IBM’s Decade: Recreating Big Blue

Things go in cycles, and given that IBM is one of the few companies that have lasted over one hundred years, it is institutionally designed to not only survive technology cycles but thrive in them. The cycle we are now in is returning the market to something very similar to what existed in the 1970s prior to the rise of Apple and Microsoft. That is a class of vertically integrated firms that largely sell directly to line managers, and where IT has a very different role and likely a very different mission and reporting structure.
