Oracle vs. EMC: Comparing Dominance Strategies

I believe the choice between Oracle and EMC’s customer-facing strategies and methodologies is very stark. Oracle wants you locked in so you can never leave. EMC may want you just as badly, but it is focused on improving its business to the point that customers will never want to leave. It is hard to miss the analogy of this approach to hell and heaven and suggests clients will likely prefer the latter to the former.

I think there are three things that define a good enterprise IT vendor: enterprise products and services, enterprise geographic reach, and a focus on satisfying customers’ needs and expectations. The fact that EMC focuses much of its efforts and technologies on making customers happy and loyal suggests it is the quintessential enterprise vendor.
