Zettanet Enhances Cloud-Based NetApp BDR For The Enterprise

Released initially in early December as a cloud backup and recover service sold only by its channel partners, Zetta.net DataProtect for NetApp has been enhanced for the enterprise. It integrates backup, replication and recovery software, enterprise-grade online storage and WAN traffic optimization and can be deployed and operational in less than 30 minutes, said Gary Sevounts, VP of marketing, Zetta.net. The company says it does not require tapes, third-party software or a second set of NetApp storage systems, and is very competitively priced.

Zetta delivers an affordable, enterprise-grade offsite backup and disaster recovery (BDR) solution for organizations that don’t have budgets and resources for redundant NetApp storage systems, SnapMirror software, or another data center, said Sevounts. It helps to significantly reduce the cost and complexity, while improving RPO and RTO for organizations that rely today on tape and expensive backup software, he added.

There are three major trends driving the need for the expanded offering, said Sevounts. The rampant growth of data is well-documented, but the number of files to be stored is also skyrocketing, along with the third trend, the decentralization of backup and recovery, he said. However, the three existing types of solutions aren’t getting the job done in these new circumstances: traditional BDR solutions from companies like Symantec and CommVault that are struggling with performance issues, applicances that can quickly become costly and complex to manage, and consumer-oriented cloud backups like Mozy and Carbonite that aren’t built to meet enterprise scale and performance.

“So we put together a solution that is enterprise grade. It has all the capabilities of the three approaches, without the drawbacks.”

DataProtect for NetApp is a software as a service offering only, a four-in-one service, providing on-site backup, off-site backup, disaster recorvery and archiving, said Sevounts. “We architected this solution to be very fast, to take full benefit of the cloud.”

“Zetta.net removes the need for additional iron with lean, high-performance software, coupled with its Smart Cloud, offering enterprise-class backup without the high price tag” said Deni Connor, principal analyst, Storage Strategies NOW, in a prepared statement. “DataProtect for NetApp is a sleek solution for VARs and MSPs that promises to win more deals against comparable hardware-based alternatives.”

BDR, also known as Business Recovery and Continuity (BRC) and backup and recovery and restore (BURR), has been good to Zetta.net. In January the company reported 133% growth in revenue, and more than 100% in customers in 2012, in an IT Cloud Services market that has a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 26.4%, which is five times that of the IT industry overall.

Last May cloud-based backup provider Asigra reported: 66% of respondents are considering cloud backup; 62% are considering a new approach to backup/recovery in the next 12-18 months; 59% cite increasing volumes of data to protect as a business driver to modernize backup; and 54% cite faster recovery times as a reason to modernize their current backup procedures. In August TheInfoPro (TIP), a service of 451 Research, found that backup is still the number-two time-consuming task for storage professionals. The study found that NetApp placed fourth (9%), behind Symantec (45%), IBM (25%) and EMC (20%) in virtual server backup. While it does not have its own backup software, relying instead on partnerships with CommVault and Syncsort, some users consider the use of NetApp’s snapshots and replication to constitute backup and recovery.

The decision to extend DataProtect to the NetApp environment was customer-based, said Sevounts. The company surveyed its customers and that was the one that had the biggest footprint. It already supports Windows, Linux and Mac operating systems, as well as unstructured data, SQL, MS Exchange, VMware and Windows System State. While Zetta.net made it clear it has no plans to support other platforms at this time, its solution requires no proprietary elements and could be available for other vendors’ platforms at a future date.

The company said the key features of Zetta.net DataProtect for NetApp include: Open Replication – enabling the browsing of backup files and folders in the cloud prior to recovery, enabling more granular and faster restores; Flexible Recovery – flexibility to recover backup data to other servers or filers, instead of having to restore data to another NetApp system; and Incremental forever backups – after the initial full backup, Zetta detects incremental changes in the data, and applies them to the existing offsite backup copy, bringing it current.

Zetta.net removes NDMP inefficiencies and supports UNIX and NTFS ACLSs and LUN backups and restores. It also delivers incremental forever backup and replication for long-term data availability.

Installation requires a simple download and deployment of the lightweight ZettaMirror software on a gateway server.
