EMC Seeks To Extend Leadership With Storage Announcements

In the good old days, IT vendors used to roll out a new product or update on an annual basis – or less frequently – and whenever possible, would do so at a major industry/customer event. The pace of innovation has changed, and a prime example of that is EMC’s VMAX, VPLEX and RecoverPoint data-protection announcements a week prior to its big customer conference.

The high-end Symmetrix brand – customers include 90% of the top 20 banks and almost 95% of the Fortune 500 – would do one release a year, and this is the third big VMAX (VMAX 10 and VMAX Cloud) release this year, said Colin Bailey, Sr. Director Product Marketing. “We want to continue and extend our leadership and innovation in mission critical storage.”

The company said the latest release of VMAX is the first tier 1 storage platform to offer simultaneous Continuous Data Protection (CDP) when using remote copies by integrating its SRDF and RecoverPoint technologies. RecoverPoint 4.0 makes enterprise-class data protection more accessible to midrange customers with a software-only option for VNX unified storage, and VPLEX delivers continuous availability to the midrange with a new frame-based licensing model for VNX arrays.

The VMAX platform isn’t the only thing the storage giant has been busy with leading up to next week’s event. In mid-April the company updated its Data Domain deduplication storage systems and SourceOne archiving software, and in March it released a totally redesigned Data Protection Advisor (V6).

According to EMC’s Peter Conway, VP and COO, Product Operations & Marketing, Enterprise Storage Group, RecoverPoint 4.0 changes the replication economics for VNX, providing customers’ savings up-to 60% on their replication investment. Other improvements include: WAN bandwidth reduction technology optimizes network resource utilization and can reduce associated costs by up to 90%; asynchronous throughput increases by over 60% to 400MB/sec; the number of protected volumes is increased by 4X to over 8000 Volumes; and replicated capacity increases by 7X to 2PB.

With the ability to use both SRDF and RecoverPoint CDP to protect the same data, VMAX customers are getting the gold standard for remote replication to be joined with the world’s most innovative operational recovery, said Conway. “EMC is the first to do this, and no other vendor has it.”
