Zetta.net Doubles Cloud Backup And Recovery Performance

Zetta.net’s three-in-one enterprise-grade data protection offering that includes local software, cloud backup, archiving and disaster recovery functionality,  DataProtect (v4.0), is 200% faster than v3.0, and 396% faster backup speed than competitors, said the company. The Sunnyvale, CA-based ISV also announced a 243% year-over-year increase in its customer base and an additional round of financing ($8 million) to fund expansion.

The relentless growth in data has been exceeding the capabilities of the traditional enterprise backup vendors, said Chris Schin, VP of Products, who started off in enterprise cloud backup almost a decade ago at Symantec. “They focused on backup, and then cloud. We focused on the Internet, and then backup.”

According to IDC, storage is increasing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 53% between 2011 and 2016. While somewhat dated, research from TheInfoPro (TIP), a service of 451 Research, reported that backup is still the number-two time-consuming task for storage professionals.

“One of the reasons why we came up with this announcement is that we see cloud backup being at a tipping point,” said Gary Sevounts, VP of Marketing. “The tipping point is the coming of age in the enterprise. Until recently there has been a lot of talk about cloud backup and cloud in general… but the biggest barrier has not been security… the biggest barrier has been performance.”

A lot of companies saw security as solved, and were ready to adopt product but were disappointed with performance, he said. “From the get go performance was at center stage for us.”

The dirty little secret of the online backup community for the last decade was performance, said Schin. “Anything above a terabyte, most of our competitors have problems dealing with.”

DataProtect is designed specifically for the Internet with built-in WAN traffic optimization and 10 patent-pending cloud performance acceleration technologies, he said. The new release includes a redesigned user interface, local backup functionality for all data sets, and support for a range of Exchange server configurations. It is available now, starting at $225 per month, and includes unlimited backup and recovery software, 500GBs of cloud storage, 24×7 unlimited engineer-level support and monitoring, and all maintenance, updates and upgrades. Zetta.net also announced that DataProtect for NetApp is also GA.
