Silver Peak Systems is taking the next step in its evolution to a software-driven business by making its cloud-ready WAN optimization VX software available in hourly increments directly from Amazon Web Services via the AWS Marketplace. Although this won’t be the last cloud provider the company will partner with, it is now the first WANop vendor to offer an hourly license that can be purchased and deployed directly from the Amazon marketplace, said Vivian Xu, Director of Cloud and Virtualization Product Management.
“This is how we see the industry moving.” First, virtualization technology, and then virtual appliances. “The logical next step is running virtualization in the cloud.” But there is a problem with Internet latency that can really hurt transfer speeds, she said.
The use cases are also broader than just data acceleration. “We’re also seeing use cases for Big Data and high-performance computing.”
Making the software available via the AWS Marketplace eases the network limitations undermining any and all enterprise applications running in the cloud, she said. “Silver Peak software installs quickly and easily to accelerate data to and from AWS, making it appear like your cloud-based applications are being hosted right next door, and with utility pricing, AWS customers only pay for the WAN optimization they need.”
The cost-savings can be significant, said the company. In some cases WANop can result in up to 80% cost savings versus un-optimized wide area network connections.
In a recent interview new CEO David Hughes, most recently CTO, and the original CEO when he founded the company back in 2004, said “We are revolutionizing the WAN optimization market, and in the process, have transformed ourselves into a software-driven business.” WANop is still primarily a hardware-based offering, with appliances accounting for 64% of the market, and while the move to virtual appliances is well underway, only 8% currently use a cloud service, but 38% plan to take to the clouds.
Gartner expects the public cloud services market to grow 18.5% this year to $131 billion worldwide. Infrastructure as a service (IaaS), including cloud compute, storage and print services, continued as the fastest-growing segment of the market, growing 42.4 percent in 2012 to $6.1 billion and expected to grow 47.3 percent in 2013 to $9 billion. North America is the largest region in the cloud services market, accounting for 59 percent of all new spending on cloud services from 2013 through 2016. AWS offering ‘clearly dominates the cloud platform space holding as much as 70% of the market, with its enterprise clients spending anywhere from $12,000 to $2.5 million per year on its infrastructure services.’
According to 451 Research, overprovisioning is a way of life for public cloud customers. While 19% of respondents are using capacity planning tools and load balancing to adjust for resource demand fluctuations, more than half are relying on overprovisioning to support peak requirements. “There is a clear opportunity ahead for vendors of capacity planning, analysis and optimization tools or services to help organizations improve their resource utilization and VM sizing with the potential for significant savings in capital and operational costs,” wrote Peter ffoulkes, Research Director for Servers and Cloud Computing, in a recent blog.
Silver Peak is looking at a variety of cloud providers, including Microsoft Azure, as well as some private cloud providers like OpenStack, said Xu. The company will also make sure it tightly integrates its software with the different cloud providers, she added.
Silver Peak VX software cloud benefits include:
