Caringo: Bringing Together Software-Defined & Object Storage
Two of the biggest trends in storage today are software-defined storage and object storage. What are they and why are they important? Let’s consider that by examining software vendor Caringo, which deals with both areas.
Caringo is no Johnny-come-lately to the party. Its flagship object storage platform – CAStor – has been available since the summer of 2006 (when the term “object storage” wasn’t even being used) after the company’s founding in 2005. In a recent announcement, Caringo relabeled CAStor as Swarm to better convey a sense of the motion and breadth the software brings to storage management. And since Caringo Swarm manages storage separate from physical platforms, Caringo is also a player in the software-defined storage market. But before we examine the twin trends, we need to examine why there is a need for them.
