The traction over the last few years in the artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) space is remarkable, and I’m not just talking about consumer-based products like self-driving cars, or virtual assistants like Google Assistant, Alexa, or Siri. While those products get the headlines, AI/ML is rapidly spreading across the enterprise IT space. I feel like I can’t go a day without a company mentioning AI or ML as part of their product or forward-looking strategy. It’s not just for crazy, sci-fi predictive analytics projects in a bunker somewhere. While that definitely still happens, AI and ML (and deep learning too) are being used across all aspects of IT: big data, cloud, IoT, security, infrastructure, systems management, etc.While AI/ML is a top priority for businesses that expect it to have a significant (positive) business impact as they continue to digitally transform, investments remain modest because of its sheer impact on all aspects of the infrastructure. IBM OpenPOWER Moves on Deep Learning with a Vengeance

IBM’s OpenPOWER organization has clearly stepped up its game this week with a massive move towards making deep learning and AI efforts far more affordable. The latest announcement was to expand both its Open Source efforts to include TensorFlow—a Google-developed numerical platform designed for AI and deep learning—and significant enhancements to its NVIDIA-enhanced POWER8 platform—the S822LC (as these things get smarter I’m starting to wonder when we’ll stop using letters and numbers for names and just call them “Bruce”). New IBM Software Toolkit Supercharges Deep Learning

A few weeks ago, IBM launched a new POWER-based data center solution for High Performance Computing (HPC) applications, including artificial intelligence (AI), deep learning and advanced analytics. The Power System S822LC is a Linux-based offering that leverages a new POWER8 chip and NVIDIA’s NVLink interconnect technology optimized for the Power architecture. Via NVLink, IBM’s Power server architecture can be tightly integrated with NVIDIA’s Pascal architecture and the company’s Tesla P100 GPUs. Why is this a big deal? Because the new Power System S822LC solutions avoid the potential bottlenecks that are commonly associated with conventional PCIe interfaces. That’s a good thing in HPC applications that require sustained, muscular data throughput. But it also means that HPC systems utilizing Power System S822LC hardware can deliver considerably higher performance than similarly configured Intel-based systems with PCIe.
