Cannabis cultivation has recently seen a surge in Northern Macedonia. Here cannabis has been legalized only for medicinal uses, and banned for recreational uses. It was in February 2016 that the Macedonian Parliament Health Committee approved the legalization of medical marijuana. One can now find cannabis oil in any Perris Cannabis Dispensary.
What are medical uses of marijuana?
The cannabis plant contains chemicals called cannabinoids. Each of these has different effects on the body. The main chemicals which are extracted from cannabis plants for use in medicine are Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Medical marijuana is used for treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, epilepsy, eating disorders and appetite loss, nausea, multiple sclerosis, muscle spasms among others. It is also used in treatment of mental health conditions like schizophrenia and PTSD.
Cannabinoids help ease pain and inflammation, reduce anxiety, relax muscles and slow down tumor growth.
Why are people of Northern Macedonia eager to farm cannabis?
The people of North Macedonia have recently realized the potential of farming cannabis. It has been easier ever since the government legalized marijuana for medical purposes. There have been several seminars organized by medical activists that increased awareness among the North Macedonians about medical uses of cannabis.
The cultivation of cannabis for medical uses is considered a profitable business. It also does not require a lot of hard work and assures excellent future prospects. North Macedonia is one of the poorest countries in Europe where agriculture contributes 8% of national output. Cannabis cultivation can contribute to around 1% of the total national output. However export quality marijuana is yet to be cultivated.
The resources needed to grow medicinal grade cannabis are easily and cheaply available in Macedonia. The nation has the potential to grow into a major cannabis superpower in the future, if cannabis cultivation is propagated in a proper manner.
