Silver Peak Boosts Wide Area Network Performance 500%
So little capacity, so much demand: what’s a network manager to do? According to IDC, Internet-generated broadband traffic will increase approximately 50% year over year on fixed networks and 100% on mobile networks, while Cisco predicts cloud-based network traffic will grow 600% by 2016.
A recent Forrester study, commissioned by Silver Peak Systems, found that 66% of IT professionals believe their ability to replicate data is constrained by limited bandwidth, while 72% would like to move more data than they currently do.
Silver Peak has a suggestion: how about taking a look at the world’s fastest wide area network optimization hardware appliance? The newest offering from the maker of physical and virtual WANop appliances is capable of delivering 20 Gbps of data throughput, said Damon Ennis, vice president of product management.
No one in the industry has been able to reach WAN performance with 5Gbps of WAN capacity and up to 20 Gbps of optimized throughput, until now, he said. This is five times more WAN capacity and throughput than any other product on the market, and made possible by the company’s virtual acceleration architecture. The company is also introducing two virtual appliances with data accelerators up to 10 times faster than the nearest competitor, Riverbed.
Silver Peak has seen strong demand for its virtual line-up, with more than 30,000 downloads, but in spite of the virtualize-everything movement there’s still a place for physical devices, said Ennis. “At the high end of the performance spectrum, we still need to provide hardware… the hypervisor vendors aren’t there yet.” In addition, there are a number of customers that require physical appliances for specific needs.
Regardless of whether customers go software, hardware, a combination, or change their needs, the software is the same, he said. “It’s the same bits and bytes that run across the virtual and physical. That’s what enables us to scale.”
The NX-11K is a two-rack-unit (2U) hardware appliance offers 5 Gbps of WAN capacity and up to 20 Gbps of optimized throughput for TCP and non-TCP applications, and supports 512,000 simultaneous sessions. The company calls its VX-8000 and VX-9000 virtual appliances the industry’s fastest software data accelerators. The VX-9000 delivers more than one Gbps of WAN performance—10-times faster than the nearest competitor’s virtual product (Riverbed). Like the rest of its VX virtual software, they run on any standard hypervisor including VMware vSphere, Citrix XenServer, Microsoft Hyper-V, and KVM.
While the NX-11K ($399,995) won’t be available until June, both the VX-8000 ($38,731/year) and the VX-9000 ($55,331/year) are available now. The software appliances are also available for a free 30-day trial.
